When you own your own home, it is essential to inspect it regularly, inside and out, to help avoid unexpected costly repairs.
Late summer and early fall are the perfect time to tackle general home maintenance projects in the Pacific Northwest because the weather is generally still dry, and temperatures are moderate. You can accomplish most tasks listed without the help of a professional but call for professional assistance if a project is beyond your abilities.
Outside:
- Aerate your lawn (technically can be done in spring or fall).
- Rake leaves, mow the lawn, and winterize your garden. Bring plants in during cold spells to prevent frost damage.
- Empty gas-powered lawn equipment of fuel to avoid damage.
- Inspect the roof for missing, loose, or damaged shingles and leaks.
- Repair siding, including caulking and paint touch-up.
- Power-wash windows and siding at least once a year between March and November, but before freezing temperatures arrive.
- Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts.
- Mend cracks and gaps in the driveway and walkways, cooler temperatures cause the pavement to contract, and the cracks will be at their widest.
- Inspect exterior doors for a proper seal, oil hinges, fix squeaky handles and loose locks.
- Drain and store hoses, drain in-ground sprinkler systems, outdoor plumbing, and insulate outdoor waterspouts and pipes to prevent freezing.
- Hire a certified chimney sweep to inspect and clean flues and vents.
- Clean windows and door screens. Re-caulk/seal around doors and windows to keep cold air out.
Inside:
- Have the forced-air heating system inspected by a professional. Schedule an inspection before the heating season begins in late summer or early fall.
- Check the fireplace for damage or hazards and clean fireplace flues.
- Tune-up major home appliances before the holidays
- Clean refrigerator and freezer drip pans, and vacuum the coils
- Clean drains in sinks, tubs, showers, and dishwashers.
- Replace the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Install a smoke detector on every floor of your home, including the basement.
- Clean the carpets.
- Clean your dryer vent and duct to remove lint buildup and prevent the dryer from becoming a fire hazard.
- Vacuum bathroom exhaust fan cover.
- Clean the kitchen exhaust hood and air filter of buildup. You will use your stove and oven a lot more during the holidays.
- Check your water heater for leaks and pressure issues. Consider installing a leak detector to prevent costly flooding damage.
Finishing your home maintenance before winter sets in allows you to enjoy the holidays, knowing your home is prepared for whatever the weather brings!
